To Recap
We develop new embodied practices first, so that as the soma opens through blending and allying, there are other ways available to navigate our days and choices. If the safety shaping has been taking care of boundaries by keeping others away, as that begins to process and let go, we still need ways to have boundaries. We put these new practices in place first so they are available and ready. New practices and options also support the soma in allowing the older strategies to let go.
Lastly, there are an I, you, and we to all of these practices. It is not an individualized learning of boundaries or requests that gets to be used free-form just for our own concerns. I have heard too many people come out of traditional therapy with an avid commitment to their own individualized boundaries, with no consideration for the family systems they are a part of, or the social conditions they may be perpetuating. The more privilege one has, the more likely it is for people to use new practices to perpetuate that privilege. Thus, we need to keep intersecting healing and transformation with social consciousness and participating in social justice.
The social norms and rules of the economy shape our capacities to consent, have boundaries, and decline. These conditions say much about who gets to request and offer, and who is meant to fulfill these for others. Because we have all been shaped by these conditions, we all can learn from and deepen these practices to serve interdependence, equity, and collective action.
